Carolyn Sime -Program Manager for the Montana Sage Grouse Habitat Conservation Program. She leads implementation of Montana’s Sage Grouse Conservation Strategy under the direction of the Office of the Governor and the Montana Sage Grouse Oversight Team. The Program is administratively attached to the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation for administrative purposes. She holds a B.S. degree in biology, and M.S. degree in fish and wildlife management from Montana State University, and is a licensed attorney. She studied sage grouse for her M.S. degree. She worked as a wildlife biologist for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks for 20 years, 10 of which was devoted to leading development of the gray wolf program and Montana’s efforts to delist the wolf from the federal Endangered Species Act. Therese Hartman and Graham Neale also work in the Program and hold degrees in fish and wildlife and have approximately 30 years combined experience. The greater sage grouse was once a candidate for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act across its range in 11 western states. Montana and 10 other western states developed conservation strategies to conserve sage grouse and address threats caused by habitat fragmentation, development, and loss of sagebrush. These state commitments led the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to decide listing was not warranted in October, 2015. The Program implements Montana’s Strategy, which is comprised of the Greater Sage Grouse StewardshipAct, Executive Order 12-2015, and private land stewardship. A key focus is habitat conservation, including noxious weed control which is required both by state law and Executive Order 12-2015.  This presentation will provide an overview ofMontana’s Sage Grouse Conservation Strategy.
